Feels-like temperatures
Feels-like is an apparent temperature, combining air temperature with humidity, wind and solar radiation to estimate how hot it actually feels. In the humid tropics it often runs well above the measured air temperature. Ours come from AccuWeather RealFeel and Open-Meteo apparent temperature.
This matters more in our region than most. A 2022 study in the International Journal of Climatology analysed 40 years of Caribbean data using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), which looks beyond air temperature, and found heat stress rising fastest in the Lesser Antilles and southern Florida.
Rainfall
Rainfall comes from weather-model data that measures an area covering each island, not from a single rain gauge. A gauge reports exactly what fell at one location; an area figure describes the island as a whole, which is what matters when comparing islands.
Because Eastern Caribbean rainfall is largely convective and highly localised, one district can flood while another stays dry, so an island-wide figure will read lower than the wettest neighborhood experienced. Estimates are also refined as more observations arrive: recent hours are re-checked and updated as our sources revise them, with totals typically settling within 24 to 48 hours. Each month our totals are compared against the ERA5 climate record as an integrity check.
